On WordPress

I haven’t found a better platform for my stuff than WordPress.

Do I want Matt Mullenweg and WP Engine to come to some agreement and get this behind us. Absolutely.

But I don’t think switching platforms because of Matt’s behavior makes any sense. And yes that’s just my opinion.

Maybe stop contributing to the project until things get better. Or don’t submit your plugin to the main WordPress.org repo. But leaving a platform that you know and love, isn’t doing anything to Matt, really.

If anything it’s hurting you. Now, if you were already other-CMS-curious then this might be the time to do a switch or explore other options. But jumping from WordPress, especially a self-hosted version, isn’t doing anything… come on! Get real.

Now, not paying for products that Automattic, Matt’s company, makes? Sure that’s a protest. Maybe do that instead of nuking your own tech stack.

This is just my opinion. Thoughts?

  1. I agree, vote with your wallet. But don’t screw yourself in the process. That’s more of what I’m talking about.

That’s not really the reason I’ve seen most people use when explaining their decision to look for other options. Most of the people leaving or planning to leave WordPress for some other CMS don’t seem to care about “hurting” Matt’s bottom line. The most common explanation I’ve seen is concern for the future of WordPress. After watching Matt cut off an entire platform from the plugins, security updates, and other stuff hosted on WordPress dot org, any admin would stop to consider “What if I’m in the blast radius of his next target?”When a project’s BDFL starts behaving erratically, people look for alternatives.#WPDrama

    1. Yea, I guess you’re right.

  3. @seth Unfortunately, I'm pretty locked-in at The Day Job™. We've got a ton of administrative processes that are built out in 3rd party tools that run on WP and would be very hard to replicate anywhere else. If I could get a do-over… well, I wouldn't waste it on The Day Job™ OR WordPress, but you get the idea. 😉

    1. See I still like WordPress and the functionality. I don’t like what Matt Mullenweg is doing to the community and the product. It’s pure evil.

  4. @seth i feel like you could replace some words with Twitter and Musk and see why journalists seemed committed to propping up a bad dude.

  5. @seth People who want to protest by not using a piece of FOSS completely fail to understand FOSS. It's yours. You can use it, forever, regardless of what the asshole who thinks he controls it wants. You don't need to upend your shit to tell him he's an asshole. Just stop paying him.

    1. Yep. I tend to agree. You don’t have to contribute back to an asshat’s company if you don’t like what the asshat is doing.

  6. Love your point of view. I hope it works out just fine.
