Matt Mullenweg Doesn’t Like Being Called Out On His Behavior

Inc.com posted an article that their reporter did with Matt Mullenweg, the co-founder of WordPress.

In the article the reporter, David H. Freedman, doesn’t paint a sunshine and rainbows picture of the whole fiasco between Matt (et. al) and WP Engine.

Matt, in his right, responded calling the piece a “Hit Piece.”

I don’t blame Matt for not liking being called out on his actions, but what does he honestly expect? Honestly, he put a, formerly mandatory, checkbox that made people swear allegiance to pineapple on pizza to log in to WordPress.com. It’s now optional.

I’d love to hear all of your thoughts.

  1. @seth Mullenweg is the biggest threat faced by WordPress; an infant with a loaded handgun loose in the WP community.#WordPress

  2. @seth from a quick skim of the article all his rebuttals seem disingenuous at best."I do not control the WordPress Foundation. I am one of three board members, so by definition am not in control" – we all know by now the other 2 have nothing to do with WP and he is de facto in control. He's my age (give or take a few weeks), we live very different lives. Though I do wish I'd thought of making a CMS in my 20's πŸ˜‚

  3. @sethAn error I noticed in the article – the WordPress Foundation does *not* "oversee… the website that serves as the gateway to WordPress resources…" That is solely owned and controlled by Mullenweg himself.

    1. @seth They state this several times through the article, but that line near the beginning contradicts the mentions later.

  4. @seth it has been really painful to watch. I moved away from WordPress but used to have all my sites in it and do support for others. While I think that people who benefit from FOSS have an obligation to pay back, everything about how he’s behaved is inexcusable. If he simply said their choices were disappointing and not contributing proportionally to the ecosystem, that’d be fine. But everything he’s done has been over the top and unhinged.

    1. I totally agree. Unhinged is the right way of saying it. Sadly.

  5. @seth I expect a responsible publication to report things factually, not fan the flames.

    1. It’s hard not to fan them when Matt is literally the BDFL and not so benevolent right now.
