I will never forget today 22 years ago.
It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky.
I was a sophomore at the University of Delaware.
I was living in the Gilbert residence hall. I had just arrived at the Russell dining hall which was next door.
Getting my food I heard that a plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York over a radio playing in the food area. They at first were reporting that it was a small plane.
I got my food, ate quickly, and rode to math class. I forgot my books at the dining hall so I had rush back to get them.
In math there were rumbles of what had happened but not much. The teacher didn’t say anything.
After math I went to my Psychology 101 class nearby. When everyone settled in Professor Giza told us that two commercial airliners had hit the Twin Towers and they collapsed. They fucking collapsed.
She then told us about the Pentagon and the 4th plane crashing in western Pennsylvania.
I remember thinking to myself that it was like a Tom Clancy novel. Like his book Executive Orders, to be exact.
A female student the ran out of the classroom crying. That image gets me choked up every time I think of it. She probably knew someone.
Professor Giza asked if we wanted to continue class. The majority decided that we should.
I tried but decided to leave and go back to my dorm to turn on the news.
When I got back to my room. I turned on the TV and watched in horror as two commercial jets hit the World Trade Center and the two buildings crashing to the ground.
I hardly cried. I must have been I shock.
I remember calling my step mother, Dina, who worked in Manhattan. The cell phone lines were busy.
I eventually found out that she was okay and had walked across a bridge to New Jersey to get home that day.
To this day, I remember that day like it was yesterday. I will until my dying breath.
Never Forget.
